MacKenzie Course @ Haggin Oaks
The MacKenzie Golf Course was designed by the legendary virtuoso, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, in 1932. It's a classic "parkland" type golf course with flat to rolling terrain. The fairways are lined with mature oak trees and the Arcade Creek meanders through the middle of the course. The MacKenzie G.C. hosted the PGA Tour's Sacramento Open from 1935-1938. Legendary players participated every year in the Open including Walter Hagen, Jimmy Demaret, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. The MacKenzie Golf Course also hosted the 1963 National US Public Links Championship and the 1992 National US Women's Public Links Championship.
The course was renovated in 2000 by Mike Asmundsen. The new renovation has captured the "old charm and feel" of Dr. Alister MacKenzie's design of 71 years ago. With new greens stimped between 10 & 11 for the tournament, the 7,000-yard MacKenzie Golf Course is fair, but challenging from the back tees. The competitive course record of 64 was set in the 2002 Public Links Qualifier by J.J. Jakovac, 2004 State Fair Championship by Erik Flores, and 2005 Sacramento City Championship by Bob Niger.
